Power BI Import vs DirectQuery Explained

Introduction

When connecting data to Power BI, analysts can choose between two different data connection modes: Import Mode and DirectQuery Mode.

Understanding the differences between these two approaches is important because they affect report performance, refresh strategies, and how data is processed. This article explains how Import Mode and DirectQuery work and when each option should be used.

Import Mode

In Import Mode, data is loaded directly into Power BI. This allows reports to run very quickly because the data is stored in memory.

Import Mode is generally preferred for:

• faster report performance
• smaller to medium datasets
• dashboards that do not require real-time updates

DirectQuery Mode

DirectQuery allows Power BI to connect directly to a data source without importing the data. Instead of storing data locally, Power BI sends queries to the database whenever a report is viewed.

DirectQuery is useful for:

• very large datasets
• real-time reporting scenarios
• situations where data must remain in the source database

Choosing the Right Mode

Most Power BI reports use Import Mode because of its performance advantages.

However, DirectQuery can be valuable for large enterprise data environments where real-time access is required.
